How accurate is an online ruler, honestly?
Out of the box, not very. A web page cannot ask your monitor how many physical inches wide it is; browsers only report pixels. Any site that claims its ruler is automatically 100 percent accurate on every device is wrong, and it is easy to prove: open the same "auto" ruler on a 24 inch monitor and a 14 inch laptop at the same resolution and the centimeter will be a different physical length on each.
That is why this ruler is built around a ten second calibration instead of a false promise. After you match the on-screen card to a real payment card once, the ruler typically lands within half a millimeter over a 10 cm span. Your calibration is stored in your browser, so the ruler opens at actual size every time after that.
Why a credit card calibrates any screen
Every payment card in the world, from any bank in any country, follows the same physical standard: ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1, which is exactly 85.60 mm wide and 53.98 mm tall with 3.18 mm rounded corners. Your card is a precision reference object that happens to live in your wallet.
When you drag the on-screen card until it matches your real one, the tool learns how many of your screen's pixels span 85.60 mm. From that single measurement it derives your true pixels per inch and rescales every tick mark on the ruler. The same trick works with other standard objects if you do not have a card handy:

How to measure an object with this ruler
Calibrate first, then hold the object gently against the screen along the scale. Click or tap once at each end of the object to drop two markers; the distance between them is shown instantly in millimeters, centimeters, decimal inches and the nearest inch fraction at your chosen graduation. Drag a marker to fine tune it, or press Clear Marks to start over. On a phone, switch to vertical mode and use the long edge of the screen, which gives you roughly 14 to 16 cm of measuring range on most modern phones.
The scale shows centimeters and millimeters along the top edge and inches along the bottom, with selectable graduations of 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 of an inch. At 1/32 you can resolve about 0.8 mm, which covers screws, drill bits, jewelry, ring sizes and paper formats comfortably.
What can you actually measure on a screen?
Anything that fits and sits flat: phone dimensions, photos, cables, screws and bolts, watch bands, ring diameters, plant leaves, envelopes, packaging, sewing seams, or the bezel of another device. For objects longer than your screen, measure in stages using a marker as your carry point, or print the PDF ruler instead. Thick or rigid objects are best measured by their shadowless edge; hold them as close to the glass as possible to avoid parallax error, the small offset you get when viewing a raised edge at an angle.
Common length conversions
The ruler converts everything live, but these anchors are worth knowing. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. One centimeter is 0.3937 inches. A 12 inch ruler is 30.48 cm. A 30 cm ruler is 11.81 inches. Half an inch is 12.7 mm, a quarter inch is 6.35 mm, an eighth is 3.175 mm and a sixteenth is 1.5875 mm.
