CGPA to Percentage: Everything You Need to Know
What Is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of all the grade points you earned across all semesters of your degree, weighted by credits. Most Indian universities report academic performance on a 10-point scale, so a CGPA of 8.0 out of 10 is a strong result.
CGPA replaces the older percentage-based system at many universities because it smooths out the variation between subjects — a 78% in one course and a 74% in another both become a grade point of 8, making comparisons more consistent.
How to Convert CGPA to Percentage
The most widely used conversion is the UGC-recommended standard formula:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
For example, a CGPA of 8.2 converts to: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. This formula is accepted by most employers, government job portals, and higher education institutions when they ask you to report percentage equivalence.
The multiplier 9.5 was derived because the midpoint of the grade range 9–10 (which corresponds to an O grade) is 9.5. Every grade band is anchored at its midpoint, and the overall average reflects a proportional blend of those midpoints.

Universities using CGPA × 10 − 7.5
VTU and AKTU both use an offset formula. The −7.5 brings the converted percentage closer to the historically lower marks distributions at these universities. A CGPA of 8.0 gives 72.5%, not 80%.
| University | Formula | CGPA 8.0 |
|---|---|---|
| VTU — Visvesvaraya Technological University (Karnataka) | (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 | 72.50% |
| AKTU — Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (UP) | (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 | 72.50% |
Special Formula
| University | Formula | CGPA 8.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai University — Engineering (old scheme) | (CGPA × 7.1) + 11 | 67.80% |
If your university is not listed, use the Custom Multiplier option in the calculator above. Most institutions that aren't listed fall back to CGPA × 9.5 (the UGC default). Your transcript's last page usually states the formula your university uses.
What Does Your Percentage Mean?
Once you have your percentage, here is how it maps to the standard grade classification used by most Indian universities and employers:
| Percentage Range | Classification |
|---|---|
| 70% and above | First Class with Distinction |
| 60% – 69.99% | First Class |
| 50% – 59.99% | Second Class |
| 40% – 49.99% | Pass Class |
| Below 40% | Fail |
Government job applications in India typically require a minimum of 60% (First Class) for most positions. Some competitive central government exams require 55%. Postgraduate admissions at universities abroad usually ask for a First Class or higher — so if your CGPA converts to anything above 60%, you are in a competitive range for most programmes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest mistake students make is applying the standard CGPA × 9.5 formula to a university that uses a different system. If you studied at VTU and apply for a job using CGPA × 9.5, your reported percentage will be 7.5 points higher than the official VTU equivalent — which becomes a problem if the employer later verifies your marks.
A second common error is confusing CGPA with SGPA. Your SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your performance for a single semester. Your CGPA is the running average across all semesters. Do not plug your SGPA into a CGPA converter — use the SGPA to percentage calculator for that.
Finally, watch the scale. Some institutions use a 4-point GPA scale rather than a 10-point CGPA scale. A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is not 35% — it is roughly 87.5%. The conversion rules are completely different. The calculator above is built for 10-point CGPA systems used across Indian universities.
