CGPA to Percentage: Everything You Need to Know

What Is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of all the grade points you earned across all semesters of your degree, weighted by credits. Most Indian universities report academic performance on a 10-point scale, so a CGPA of 8.0 out of 10 is a strong result.

CGPA replaces the older percentage-based system at many universities because it smooths out the variation between subjects — a 78% in one course and a 74% in another both become a grade point of 8, making comparisons more consistent.

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage

The most widely used conversion is the UGC-recommended standard formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

For example, a CGPA of 8.2 converts to: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. This formula is accepted by most employers, government job portals, and higher education institutions when they ask you to report percentage equivalence.

The multiplier 9.5 was derived because the midpoint of the grade range 9–10 (which corresponds to an O grade) is 9.5. Every grade band is anchored at its midpoint, and the overall average reflects a proportional blend of those midpoints.

University-Specific Formulas — Complete List

Not every university uses CGPA × 9.5. Many have published their own conversion formulas, and using the wrong one gives you the wrong percentage on applications. Below is a complete reference for 60+ Indian universities.

Universities using CGPA × 10 − 7.5

VTU and AKTU both use an offset formula. The −7.5 brings the converted percentage closer to the historically lower marks distributions at these universities. A CGPA of 8.0 gives 72.5%, not 80%.

If your university is not listed, use the Custom Multiplier option in the calculator above. Most institutions that aren't listed fall back to CGPA × 9.5 (the UGC default). Your transcript's last page usually states the formula your university uses.

What Does Your Percentage Mean?

Once you have your percentage, here is how it maps to the standard grade classification used by most Indian universities and employers:

Percentage RangeClassification
70% and aboveFirst Class with Distinction
60% – 69.99%First Class
50% – 59.99%Second Class
40% – 49.99%Pass Class
Below 40%Fail

Government job applications in India typically require a minimum of 60% (First Class) for most positions. Some competitive central government exams require 55%. Postgraduate admissions at universities abroad usually ask for a First Class or higher — so if your CGPA converts to anything above 60%, you are in a competitive range for most programmes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake students make is applying the standard CGPA × 9.5 formula to a university that uses a different system. If you studied at VTU and apply for a job using CGPA × 9.5, your reported percentage will be 7.5 points higher than the official VTU equivalent — which becomes a problem if the employer later verifies your marks.

A second common error is confusing CGPA with SGPA. Your SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your performance for a single semester. Your CGPA is the running average across all semesters. Do not plug your SGPA into a CGPA converter — use the SGPA to percentage calculator for that.

Finally, watch the scale. Some institutions use a 4-point GPA scale rather than a 10-point CGPA scale. A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is not 35% — it is roughly 87.5%. The conversion rules are completely different. The calculator above is built for 10-point CGPA systems used across Indian universities.

Frequently asked questions

The standard UGC-recommended formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 7.5 equals 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. This applies to most central universities, NITs, IITs (approx.), Delhi University, BHU, SPPU, GTU, Panjab University and many others. Exceptions: VTU and AKTU use CGPA × 10 − 7.5; Anna University, JNTUH, JNTUK, JNTUA, Bangalore University, Osmania, BPUT, Calcutta, Madras, Kerala, MAKAUT and 30+ others use CGPA × 10; Mumbai University engineering uses CGPA × 7.1 + 11.

No. The CGPA × 9.5 formula is the UGC standard, but at least 40+ universities use CGPA × 10 instead (Anna University, JNTUH, JNTUK, JNTUA, Bangalore University, Osmania, BPUT, Calcutta, Madras, Kerala, MAKAUT, VIT, Manipal, KIIT and many more). VTU and AKTU use CGPA × 10 − 7.5. Mumbai University engineering uses CGPA × 7.1 + 11. Always use your university's specific formula — the calculator above has 60+ universities built in so you can select yours directly.

A CGPA of 7.5 and above (equivalent to roughly 71.25%+ using the standard formula) is generally considered a strong result and qualifies you as First Class with Distinction. For competitive government jobs and top postgraduate programmes, 7.5+ is the common cutoff. A CGPA of 6.32 or above (60%+) is First Class, which meets the minimum requirements for most graduate jobs and many public sector positions.

Yes — just divide the percentage by the multiplier used in your university's formula. For the standard formula: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. So 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. For VTU: CGPA = (Percentage + 7.5) ÷ 10. For Anna University: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10. For Mumbai University: CGPA = (Percentage − 11) ÷ 7.1.

No. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) uses its own formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10 − 7.5. For a CGPA of 8.0, the VTU equivalent is 8.0 × 10 − 7.5 = 72.5%, compared to 76% under the standard formula. Using the wrong formula when applying to employers or for further education can result in a discrepancy if they verify your marks with VTU.

Using the standard CGPA × 9.5 formula, a CGPA of 6.32 equals exactly 60.04% (rounding to 60%). To hit exactly 60%, your CGPA needs to be 60 ÷ 9.5 = 6.3158. For VTU (CGPA × 10 − 7.5), you need a CGPA of (60 + 7.5) ÷ 10 = 6.75 to reach 60%. For Anna University (CGPA × 10), you need exactly a 6.0 CGPA.
