How to Calculate Percentage from Marks

The formula is straightforward: divide your marks obtained by the total marks and multiply by 100.

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

Say you scored 432 out of 600 in your board exams. Divide 432 by 600 to get 0.72, then multiply by 100 — your percentage is 72%. That puts you in First Class under the Indian grading standard.

This calculator does that division instantly. You enter two numbers and get the answer in under a second, with the grade category shown alongside so you know exactly where you stand.

Multi-Subject Percentage Calculation

When you have results from five or six subjects and you need a single aggregate percentage, the process has three steps:

Step 1. Add up all the marks you obtained across every subject. If you scored 85, 78, 92, 67, and 88, your total is 410.

Step 2. Add up all the maximum marks. If each subject is out of 100, your total maximum is 500.

Step 3. Apply the same formula — 410 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82%.

The Multiple Subjects tab in the calculator above handles all three steps automatically. Enter each subject's obtained marks and total marks, then click Calculate. You get the overall percentage plus a per-subject table so you can see at a glance which subjects pulled your average up or down.

What Do the Grade Categories Mean?

Distinction (75% and above) is the highest grade band. Most Indian universities award Distinction to students who clear 75%, though some premium institutions set the bar at 80%. If you are targeting a merit-based scholarship or postgraduate admission, Distinction is what you need on your transcript.

First Class (60–74.99%) is considered a strong result for undergraduate degrees. Employers and entrance exam shortlists frequently use 60% as the minimum eligibility threshold for campus placements and government job applications.

Second Class (50–59.99%) indicates a passing performance above the basic minimum. Many state universities further divide this into First Division Second Class (55–59%) and Second Division (50–54%).

Pass (35–49.99%) means you cleared the exam but sit in the lower tier. CBSE sets the pass mark at 33%, while most state boards and universities require 35%. The exact number depends on the examining body and the subject.

Fail (below 35%) means the exam needs to be re-attempted. Students in this band should check their board's compartment or supplementary exam schedule.

Maximum Marks vs Passing Marks

The percentage you need to pass varies significantly across Indian education boards and universities. CBSE requires 33% in each subject for passing, which is the lowest bar among major boards. Maharashtra State Board sets the minimum at 35%. Most central and state universities require between 40% and 50% for degree pass marks — check your specific institution's regulations before assuming the national average applies to you.

Subject-wise passing minimums also exist. In practical or lab subjects, you typically need to clear both the theory paper and the practical separately. Scoring 80% overall but failing the practical component can still mean a fail in that subject.

Tips to Calculate Percentage Quickly

If you are sitting in an exam hall and need a rough check without a calculator, try these shortcuts. To find 10% of any number, just move the decimal one place to the left — 10% of 580 is 58. Double that for 20%, triple for 30%, and so on. For 75%, multiply by 3 and then divide by 4.

For a quick mental cross-check: if your marks are around half of the total, you are near 50%. If they are three quarters, you are near 75%. These rough estimates tell you immediately whether you are in Pass, Second Class, or Distinction territory without touching a calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Divide the marks you obtained by the total marks available, then multiply by 100. The formula is: Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 72 out of 100, your percentage is 72%.

432 out of 600 equals 72%. Calculation: 432 ÷ 600 = 0.72 × 100 = 72%. Under the Indian grading system, 72% falls in the First Class category (60–74.99%).

It depends on the board or university. CBSE requires 33% to pass each subject. Maharashtra SSC and HSC boards require 35%. Most Indian universities set the pass mark between 40% and 50% for degree courses. Always confirm the specific minimum with your institution.

Add all the marks you obtained across every subject to get your total obtained marks. Add all the maximum marks to get the total maximum. Then divide total obtained by total maximum and multiply by 100. Use the Multiple Subjects tab above to do this automatically for up to 12 subjects.

Marks are the raw score you receive in an exam — for example, 85 out of 100. Percentage expresses that score as a proportion of 100, so 85 out of 100 is simply 85%. When subjects have different total marks, percentage lets you compare them on a common scale. A student scoring 68 out of 80 (85%) has performed better proportionally than one scoring 80 out of 100 (80%), even though the raw marks look lower.

The most widely used formula for converting percentage to CGPA on a 10-point scale is: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. So 76% becomes approximately 8.0 CGPA. For a 4-point GPA scale, divide your percentage by 25. Use our CGPA to Percentage tool to go in the other direction.
