Who makes Thor travel trailers?

In this blog post, we will answer the following question: Who makes Thor travel trailers? We will discuss whether Thor travel trailers are of good quality and review two incredible models.

Who makes Thor travel trailers?

Thor travel trailers are made by Thor Industries, Inc. Thor Industries is one of the largest American groups in the sector and it has managed to generate a profit of $2.0 billion in the second quarter of the last year, with an addition of $637.1 million in net sales from Erwin Hymer Group (“EHG”), which Thor Industries owns and manages.

In fact, Thor Industries is the company behind all of these popular motorhomes:

  • Airstream
  • Heartland RV
  • Hymer
  • Dutchmen
  • Jayco
  • Keystone RV
  • Thor Motor Coach
  • K-Z
  • Crossroads RV
  • Redwood RV.

What type of RVs does Thor make?

Thor Industries are mostly known for manufacturing good quality motorhomes and travel trailers. Let’s review them below.

Thor Class A motorhomes

Class A motorhomes are the most luxurious and the most imposing; some are over 40 feet long! Real motorized homes have everything you need to function like at home: large kitchen with appliances, lounge area with armchairs and giant screen – and often a fireplace! – a closed bedroom with a King or Queen bed, a complete bathroom with a toilet and shower as well as enough space to sleep with your whole family.

Thor Class A motorhomes include the Tuscany RV series, the Miramar and the Hurricane, among others.

Thor Class B motorhomes

The B-Class – like the B + motorhomes – consists of a van that has been slightly enlarged – often with a raised roof – and which offers a bathroom with a shower as well as a kitchenette.

The most compact motorized vehicle on the market, it drives like a standard van and sleeps up to 4 people.

Various Thor Motor Coach models fall into this category, including the Compass and Gemini.

Thor Class C motorhome

Finally, the C-Class motorhomes are in a way more compact versions of the A-Class. They are mounted on van chassis but have a large living space not only behind the driver’s cabin but also above it. this.

Offering all the conveniences – or almost – of a Class A motorhome, the Class C are more affordable and easier to manoeuvre due to their reduced size (but which can nevertheless reach 35 feet depending on the model).

The Thor Motor Coach Quantum and Château models fall into this category.

As you can see, the Thor Motor Coach range features a host of models; you will surely find the one that will meet your needs!

The history of Thor Industries

Arguably a monopoly in the RV market, Thor has now purchased and owns the rights to nearly every major brand and their affiliate that exists in the industry. When you go to their website, you see that they host most of the brands they own and their maps, giving links to the official brand’s websites and ways to buy their many different products.

Initially, Thor was not even an RV maker. Since 1980, when Thor acquired Airstream, laying the foundation for its future success, this VR giant has grown into one of the largest and most popular RV manufacturing companies in the world.

The company first purchased Airstream to take advantage of an already thriving RV product and market, which allowed it to grow rapidly and help the company thrive.

In the 90s and mid-2000s, Thor purchased many other more popular brands, such as Dutchmen, Four Winds International, Keystone, and Damon Motor Coach.

Their most recent acquisitions of Jayco and Hymer (their first international purchase and the largest in the company’s history) took place between 2016 and 2018.

Finally, Thor added another gem to his crown after purchasing luxury RV maker Tiffin Motorhomes for around $ 300 million in 2020.

We recommend:  Thor Compass motorhome

The Compass Class C motorhome manufactured by Thor Motor Coach is compact and is ideal for frequent travellers who want to cover long distances and move constantly. Its forward heading is more streamlined than those of classic C-class motorhomes, which is why some will classify it as a B + class motorhome, not as big as a Class C motorhome and a little larger than a Class B.

Thor Motor Coach was no less dead for the equipment of the Compass motorhome which includes:

  • an electric stabilization system
  • an electric awning with integrated LED lights
  • a “Quick-Connect” propane connection
  • a high capacity battery of group 31
  • a 100W solar panel with the controller
  • an Onan® RV QG 4000 gasoline generator
  • a 30-amp electrical connection
  • An electric stabilization system.

Although it is not visible, the tanks are fitted with heating pads, the black water tank has a “Black Tank Flush” drain system and a 360 Siphon vent and the water heater is a model on request, therefore without a tank. Finally, on the roof, you can see the 13,500 BTU streamlined air conditioner and Winegard® ConnecT 2.0 antenna supporting TV, 4G network and WiFi. The air conditioner can be changed to a 15,000 BTU model.

The Compass motorhome has tanks of 25 gallons for fuel, 68 pounds for propane, 31 gallons for fresh water, 37 gallons for greywater and 19 gallons for black water.

Thor RVs recalls

Below we will discuss four Thor RV recalls and what measures were taken.

  1. Thor Motor Coach (TMC) recalls the Four Winds Hurricane and Windsport model RVs from the years 2009 to 2011, Four Winds Mandalay 2009 and 2010, Four Winds Magellan 2010 and Four Winds Serrano from the years 2010 and 2011, manufactured between May 2, 2009, and September 1, 2010.

The affected vehicles are wired to be powered by a generator and are equipped with an Iota SA-50R transfer switch which may fail when exposed to high electrical loads and operated at high ambient temperatures.

When the transfer switch fails to function properly, it can overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.

TMC will advise owners and dealers to replace the Iota SA-50R transfer switch at no charge with a transfer switch from another manufacturer. The recall began on November 23, 2015. Owners can contact Thor Customer Service for more information.

  1. Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling the certain year 2016 Challenger, Hurricane and Windsport models manufactured between July 31, 2015, and September 9, 2015.

In affected vehicles, the parking brake actuator may be out of calibration causing the parking brake system not to properly hold the vehicle, even with the parking brake pedal fully depressed. In addition, the parking brake may not fully disengage even when the parking brake pedal is released.

If the parking brake is not fully engaged, the vehicle may roll away unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury or an accident. A parking brake that gets stuck can cause a wheel end fire.

TMC will notify owners and dealers that will be required to replace the parking brake pedal assembly at no charge.

  1. Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling certain 2016 Ace, Challenger, Hurricane, Miramar, Outlaw and Windsport models manufactured between July 14, 2015, and October 16, 2015.

The drivetrain of affected vehicles built on Ford chassis may be relocated out of the “PARK” position without applying the brakes, due to improper shift cable bracket and improper shift cable adjustment.

If the vehicle can be moved in reverse without the brakes having to be applied, the vehicle may unintentionally move, increasing the risk of an accident.

Ford will notify owners of these vehicles on behalf of Thor and Ford Dealers will replace the shift control bracket free of charge and adjust the shift cable.

  1. Thor Motor Coach (Thor) recalls 12,656 Thor Challenger, Thor Citation, Thor Hurricane, Thor Tuscany, Thor Windsport models from the years 2011 to 2016, the Thor Astoria models, Thor Avanti, Thor Chateau from the years 2011 and 2012, the Thor Daybreak models from the years 2011 to 2014, Thor Outlaw, Thor Siesta from 2011 to 2015, Thor Miramar from 2014 to 2018.

The vehicles concerned are fitted with double or triple electric steps, Coachstep model, manufactured by Lippert Components. These steps use a particular bolt to secure the gear assembly to the steps. This bolt could fracture allowing the assembly to disengage from the steps. Consequently, the steps may not stay in the expected position and may be unstable.

It causes unstable entry steps to increase the risk of injury.

Thor will notify owners and dealers will install a retaining bracket free of charge to strengthen the operating mechanism and replace all affected bolts.
