RV window repair: How to repair sliding windows

If you’re having trouble with your RV’s sliding windows, a DIY RV window repair can save you hundreds of dollars compared to taking your RV to the local dealership. You will need some friends to help you with this project, but you can do it and save yourself a ton of money.

If the window isn’t broken or cracked, and you’re just having trouble sliding the window, usually a good spray with WD-40 will help. However, if using the penetrating spray doesn’t help, you may need to replace the window and the sealant strip that helps to hold the window up and place it. This simple how-to guide will show you what to do.

What will you need:

  • Replacement window and sealant strip
  • Screwdrivers set
  • Utility knife
  • Spatula
  • Sandpaper
  • Three or four friends to help

Step 1 – Buy a replacement window

Go to a local auto glass repair shop and order your RV glass replacement. Many stores will have information about the RV if you give them the make and model. However, if this is not the case, be sure to take the exact measurements of the glass you will need to replace the broken one.

Step 2 – Remove the trim around the window

Locate the plastic screw caps that are used to hold the trim or trim in place around the sliding window. Next, take a knife and cut the screws. In some cases, you may be able to use a flat-head screwdriver to remove them, rather than cutting them with the utility knife.

Step 3 – Remove the window glass

At this point, you will need three or four people to help you remove the glass from the RV window. Have a couple of people get into the vehicle and a couple of your friends stay outside with you while you remove the screws that hold the window to the frame.

One should remove the screws, be sure to put them in a safe place as you will need them later. Depending on how the sliding windows are installed, you may also have to remove the tracks or strips of sealant before you can remove the window glass.

Step 4 – Clean up the old caulking

Use the putty knife to scrape off the old caulk. Once most of the caulking is removed, use sandpaper to finish removing the caulking. Don’t sand the surface of your RV too much, but sand just enough so that you can remove the caulking and make it easier to install the new window glass.

Step 5 – Install the new window glass

Carefully put the new window glass in place and replace the track screws or sealant strips as needed.

Step 6 – Reinstall the trim

Once the window glass is installed, snap the trim back into position and reinsert the screws. Then replace the plastic caps that are used to cover the screws. Caulk the lid caps if necessary.

Step 7: Don’t forget to caulk the window

Use quality silicone caulk to caulk around the edges of the window where the old caulk was located. Try to keep the caulking cord as thin as possible while making sure it keeps moisture and water out of the window opening and your RV.
