How to choose the right bed size for your Scamp trailer

If offered the opportunity, when choosing the bed size for your Scamp trailer, the first and most important aspect you have to consider is how many people are going to sleep in the trailer.

A 44’’ bed may not be the best idea for a family of four, for example. At the same time, you may want to consider the entire layout of the trailer and whether it has additional beds, as you may not want your kids sleeping in with you!

You will understand, choosing the size of your Scamp trailer bed is far from easy, and above all meets very specific rules depending on your body type, the number of occupants of the bed, and the size of the room.

What really matters when choosing a Scamp trailer bed

The thickness of the mattress matters a lot for how comfortable a Scamp trailer bed will be. Choosing the right mattress depends first of all on your weight and build.

Here are a few tips:

  1. For sleepers 130 pounds and less: the mattress thickness may be less than or equal to 10 inches.
  2. For sleepers ranging from 130 to 230 pounds: The thickness can be between 8 and 12 inches for acceptable comfort. But many will prefer a mattress thickness of between 10 and 12 inches instead.
  3. For sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds: The thickness for those heavier sleepers should be a minimum of 11–12 inches. However, the majority will have a mattress thickness greater than 12 inches as their preferred thickness.

Testing the Scamp trailer bed properly is essential

We always recommend lying down on a mattress to test it, this also applies to the caravan. The feeling is fast. A mattress that is too firm can quickly lead to back pain and blood circulation problems through excessive compression. Ditto for a too-soft mattress that will hurt your kidneys.

Of course, firmness or softness also depends on your body mass, hence the value of taking this quick test. There are two things you can do to know if you are dealing with a bed that is too firm or too soft. If, while lying down, you can run your hand between your back and the mattress, it’s too hard. If, on the other hand, it is difficult to turn around, it is because the bed is too soft.

What about the dimensions of the trailer bed mattress?

You have to check the dimensions of the mattresses with a tape measure because the indications given in the Scamp trailer catalogues sometimes vary by a few inches! This is extremely important if you are tall or wide.

In addition, you will need to equip yourself with a specific bed set. Also remember, in your test, to move the mattress: if it is too heavy, you will be embarrassed when laying the sheets. It is also the same mattress that you will have to lift to access the storage compartment under the box spring.

Scamp manufacturers make their double beds with two mattresses placed side by side: advantageous, this solution makes it possible to less disturb the sleep of the spouse when moving.

Is body weight important when choosing a bed in a Scamp trailer?

There is currently no standard on sleeping arrangements in trailers, except for children’s berths including those in the upper position which must withstand a certain weight (displayed on a wall, between 100 and 120 lbs depending on the brand) so as not to sag.

Beds placed on the ground, on the other hand, can, according to a caravan design office manager, withstand 440 lbs, which is enough for most people. For heavy users, on the other hand, it is important to be careful and to choose a firm mattress, suitable for heavyweights. Also consider that by buying a second-hand Scamp trailer, the bedding may already be worn out, and have less resistance to weight: it may be necessary to invest in a new mattress!

The bottom line

The bedroom is one of the fundamental parts of any motorhome, so think well before choosing the layout of your caravan. Make sure you know all the pros and cons of each type of Scamp trailer bed and choose the one that’s best for you and your family.
