Can you remove internal walls in a static caravan?

In this blog post, we will answer the following question: Can you remove internal walls in a static caravan? We will explain how static caravan walls are made, how to identify the walls that can be removed, and finally, how to remove them.

Can you remove internal walls in a static caravan?

Yes, you can remove internal walls in a static caravan as long as you don’t touch the structural walls. To tell if a wall is a structural wall, examine the caravan’ structural plans to see where the original support beams were constructed. If you don’t have a copy of your plans, check your local county clerk’s office. Internal walls near the centre of a building often help support the home’s weight.

Mobile homes, prefabricated houses, trailers and RVs are assembled sequentially, so they must be dismantled in the reverse order. Typically, the manufacturer’s sequence is:

  1. Build the framing, apply the exterior skin and then install the insulation.
  2. After that, the interiors are assembled;
  3. The pipes and cables are installed;
  4.  The ceilings are mounted.
  5. The walls are put in and decorated;
  6. Hanging cabinets are attached.

This means that the cabinets must be removed first, before attempting to fully remove internal walls or replace the ceiling panels.

Are the interior walls of a static caravan load-bearing?

To understand whether the interior walls of a static caravan are load-bearing or not, go to the basement or lowest level of a building to identify interior load – load-bearing walls.

Look for beams or columns, often metal, running from one side of the room to the other. The load-bearing walls would be above these beams. In addition, all of the walls that rest on the foundation are load-bearing walls.

What to use to remove the internal walls in a static caravan?

To remove the internal walls in a static caravan you can:

  • Use a claw hammer and pry bar to remove all of the old panelling on the wall of your static caravan.
  • Use a hammer to tap or remove nails that protrude from the studs.
  • Use R 11 insulation over the existing insulation in each wall from which you removed the panels.

Note: Depending on the size of the stratic caravan it should weigh between 3,000 and 10,000 pounds. The largest homes can exceed 20,000.  Static caravan wall panels range from 5/16 ”to ½” thick.

Can you install wall anchors in the static caravan panels?

Yes, it is possible to install wall anchors in the static caravan panels without having to remove the wall. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1 – Find the spot. When installing a wall anchor in panelling, you should place it where you can drill through the vertical framing behind the panelling.

Step 2 – Drill the hole. Then you will need to drill a hole in the wall.

Step 3 – Tap the anchor.

Step 4 – Insert the screw.

How are the walls of static caravans constructed?

Static caravan walls are built much like floors. They consist of a frame, usually H-shaped, joists and wooden supports. The space between these joists forms cavities which are also used for the insulation material. The interior and exterior of the walls are then covered with panels.

How to remove static caravan walls

The construction of a static caravan takes place on an assembly line. Typically, vinyl flooring is rolled across the entire floor followed by carpet. Workers build the walls on top of the carpet. Cut the carpet in the rooms when the vinyl flooring is intended. Plaster – a form of drywall with a printed pattern – is attached to the 2 by 4s in mobile homes with staples to form the walls.

Here are the instructions for removing static caravan walls:

  1. Lift the trim from around the ceiling. Be very gentle, if you are going to reuse it. Mark the location of the trim on the back with a marker, even if you are buying new trim. This will provide a template for the parts. Remove all nails from the wall and trim. If they are bent, dispose of them. You can reuse them when they are in good condition.
  1. Separate and store the vertical corner trim. Remove any decorative horizontal or chair trim.
  1. Lever release the moulding from the floor. It is very soft as it is brittle and can be expensive to replace. Mark your location on the back. Remove all nails.
  1. Separate the first piece of seam strip. If you are going to reuse it, be very gentle. It is very difficult to remove without breaking it because it is so fragile. You may be able to save most of them. They should all be the same size, so there is no need to mark them.
  1. Remove the first piece of drywall. Try to extract in one piece if it is anything other than a straight cut. If you can, you can use it as a template to cut out the new part.
  1. Replace all the panels in the room. Use drywall nails for drywall. For drywall, use fine nails or staples.
  1. Patch any flaws in the drywall with caulk if necessary. Sand once dry. Paint or hang your wallpaper. If you choose drywall, hang up your old or new sewing strips.
  1. Retrieve the crown moulding and nail it up in the correct order using finishing nails. Nail the floor trim in place with finishing nails.

What happens when you remove internal walls in a static caravan?

A non-load-bearing wall can be demolished more easily, but nevertheless with great care. Indeed, it may contain technical elements essential for the proper functioning of the home: water pipe, electric wire, heating equipment … Heavy blows are therefore to be avoided. A hammer is ideal for removing material from the wall bit by bit. Turning off the electricity will prevent a fire if you accidentally cut an electrical component.

An electrician or a plumber can foresee the deviation of the technical elements. Their intervention is security across insurance, in the event of a disaster.

Knocking down a wall usually leaves a gaping space on the floor and ceiling. The best is to take the opportunity to change the coating and give it a lick of paint. Alternative solutions exist.

Thus, installing a mini-bar between the kitchen and the living room hides marks on the floor. It is also a very user-friendly solution, for having a drink with friends or an informal meal with the family.

It is also possible to only partially knock down a wall. The opening thus created allows light to pass through. The advantage is to keep a marked delimitation between the two parts. An interior designer is able to offer a solution that meets your expectations and the layout of the premises.

The bottom line

Internal walls in a static caravan can be removed following water damage or cracks that alter its beautiful appearance or simply to give it a facelift. However, it is not that easy to redo a caravan wall, so we recommend you think it all before hammering the wall down!
