What is the pulling capacity of my car?

What is the maximum weight that the chassis of the vehicle can support, what is the weight of the vehicle in question and what is the mass by which the engine of the vehicle can be supported? By studying these questions, the automaker determines the maximum towable weight of their vehicle.

Braked and unbraked weight

Any trailer, caravan, boat carrier or horse-drawn van with a GVWR (F2 on the registration document) greater than 750 kg, must be fitted with a braking system.

No pulling capacity

Small cars always have low traction. If you have a small model, then always check your car registration document to make sure you don’t exceed the maximum weight. If you drive a hybrid or electric vehicle, there is a good chance that your car will not be able to tow a trailer, caravan, boat carrier or horse trailer.

It is well authorized to couple a bicycle rack or a trunk on a hitch. These do not have a maximum towable weight, but a maximum drawbar load. The support load (called vertical load or boom weight) can also be found in your car’s technical booklet.

Does your car have no pulling capacity, but you want to equip it with a ball-mounted bike carrier? In this case, we have the solution: the RMC.

Can my car tow a caravan?

It is the question that we all do not ask when we want to buy a caravan, our common sense and a little help from what I am going to tell here should be more than enough to know if your vehicle is suitable or not to pull a caravan .

You have to take into account that a caravan will weigh at least 750 kg, or so the manufacturers say and although they have wheels, their aerodynamic coefficient is not the best we can find, so the extra weight that the caravan already has you have to add the braking that will cause its volume.

In addition to that we also have to take into account that when carrying a trailer, we need our set to be balanced, there is no use having a 280 hp car if later it does not weigh enough to be able to absorb the oscillatory movements of our caravan, since it would take us off the road.

For all this, I always advise that the empty vehicle should weigh at least 20% more than the loaded caravan. You will find many people who tell you that with 70 hp you can perfectly tow a 750kg MAM caravan, yes, of course you can move it and even travel with it, but the trip will be so painful that in the end you will decide to change vehicles, I advise a diesel vehicle of at least 100 hp to pull a caravan of these characteristics.

How can I know the maximum load that my car supports?

The maximum weight that a car can carry is listed in the technical sheet. It was easy to tell right? Just look for the MAM value (maximum authorized mass) and you will have the number of kilos that you can load in your car.

Of course, this value must include the car’s own weight (tare), so to be more exact the calculation would be as follows:

Maximum allowed weight = Maximum authorized mass – tare

And there is also another aspect that you must take into account: the passengers! If your vehicle has a maximum allowed weight of about 400 kilos and you have 5 passengers weighing an average of 70 kg, you would only have 50 extra kilos left to load luggage.

The problem is that, on many occasions (and especially in old cars), MAM is not indicated. In that case, you will have no choice but to search the Internet or try to orient yourself by the weight of your own vehicle.

How much luggage weight does a modern vehicle usually have?

In general, it is estimated that mid-range vehicles admit about 75 kilos of luggage. This depends a lot on the vehicle, since a Land Rover is not the same as a Mini Cooper, right?

It is important that you do not exceed that amount for two essential reasons:

  • It influences the behavior of the vehicle: it increases the braking distance, makes the car suffer more when driving (tires, suspension, …) and causes it to have to drive at a much lower speed.
  • You can get a fine: in the US the overweight of a vehicle is fined with figures from 300 to 4,000 $, so it is not something to be taken lightly. Even so, it is rare that you are fined for this unless you have the load spread out in any way and illegally (sticking out of the car for example).

Conclusions

In this article, we answered the following question: Can an Astra tow a caravan? We helped you find your model and its towing capacity. We also talked about braked and unbraked weight and how you can know the maximum load that your car supports.

Before using your trailer, caravan, boat carrier or horse trailer, it is a good idea to find the answer to this question. To ensure safety, you can never exceed the maximum traction capacity of your car. Always check your vehicle’s registration document to make sure you stay within maximum traction capacity.

What happens when you exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity?

When you exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity you bring a series of consequences for your card, such as engine overheating; tire failure, overloading the drivetrain, CO2 emissions increase among others.
