Can a Mondeo tow a caravan?

In this article, we will answer the following question: Can a Mondeo tow a caravan?

We will talk about this car’ specs, safety and tech. We will also talk about what we don’t really like about the Ford Mondeo.

Can a Mondeo tow a caravan?

With a towing capacity of 1600 kg and plenty of space for the passengers, the Ford Mondeo can easily tow a caravan.  All-wheel drive is what saves the car when you take the curves or when the weather outside does not cooperate.

All-wheel drive is the one that keeps the 1581kg weight in check and allows the car to reach 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds. These are not great numbers, but they are good enough for a car in this segment.

Ford Mondeo: what to expect

The Mondeo comes to reconfirm some of Ford’s core values, add new ones, and tarnish a little of the good reputation that Ford has made in terms of steering systems.

Specifically, the new Mondeo steering is a bit soft and the gear ratio is too high (compared to the other sporty settings of the model). Thus, the feeling is that you have to turn the steering wheel a lot for the car to turn a little.

We can point noticeable differences between the way Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 180 hp behaves, with a sedan body with tailgate, and Ford Mondeo 1.5 EcoBoost 160 hp, with a station wagon body, in the sense that the station wagon seems much more consistently closer to what we knew Ford was capable of.

Going further, the suspensions of the new Mondeo are a dream come true! Precise suspensions give the car incredible agility for its dimensions. Excellent filtering, a firm road holding and, above all, a quietness that would make any premium model in the segment feel ashamed.

If you also choose double, laminated side windows, then the exemplary acoustic comfort will accompany you up to 200 km/h. Practically, all the mechanical settings of Mondeo leave you with the feeling of a car capable of supporting much more powerful engines, towards 300 hp or more. It’s so well made and adjusted.

The space offered by the new Mondeo to its passengers is not large. It’s huge! And ergonomics… exemplary. Volvo and Mercedes-Benz accents are felt in the passenger compartment. For example, in front of the gearbox is an airy area with storage space, like all Volvo models launched in the last ten years. Let’s not forget that Ford owned the Volvo brand.

The on-board instruments combine some analogue dials with virtual needles, plus useful information for the beautifully organized driver. Likewise, there is a certain Volvo inspiration here, but also Mercedes-Benz.

Unfortunately, all that Ford has to offer (for now) on Mondeo are some ornamental finishes made of plastic, without wood or aluminium, which shows that the marketing still wanted to keep costs under control and alleviate the sensations of Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.

Even the exterior does not protect your mind from comparisons. The radiator grille brings with it what we see at Aston Martin (also a former Ford brand), and the back and side silhouette are inspired by Jaguar XF and Tesla Model S.

The top diesel engine, the 2.0 TDCi with 180 hp, moves better than the 1.5 EcoBoost on petrol, with 160 hp, but the latter offers some more pleasant acoustic reactions.

The diesel sounds overly soundproof, so you never know what speed the car is just listening to the engine. In the case of the petrol engine, you get more accurate sound notes and, if you are the kind of driver for whom the natural sound of the car matters, then the only choice remains 1.5 EcoBoost. In terms of consumption, the difference between EcoBoost and TDCi is about a litre/100 km travelled, obviously, diesel being more economical.

Ford Mondeo: Safety and technology

Safety: There is no question of safety in the new Ford Mondeo: a limousine in this segment is not allowed to have any escape in this very important chapter for the target audience of this type of car.

The car comes standard with front + side airbags for driver/passenger, knee airbag for driver and front / rear curtain airbags. An interesting mention goes to the rear seat belts that have a special system: when an impact follows, the seat belts are filled with air increasing their volume and thus preventing chest and neck injuries for the rear passengers.

To prevent various unwanted events, Ford offers a lane departure warning system as well as a traffic sign recognition system. All these systems as well as others such as ABS, ESP, etc. help the car pass the Euro NCAP test with 5 stars!

Technology: Our car also had the Sony SYNC II infotainment system that comes with an 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, USB and a 9-speaker audio system. The touch screen gives the impression that it is a resistive one, so you have to press it very well when you want your input to be recorded.

This confuses you when you try to enter different commands on the go. The system itself is quite intuitive, but many times you have to enter the same commands that you struggled to enter in the last 10 minutes just because you missed the penultimate step.

After you have managed to connect your phone and enter the address you want in the navigation system, everything works like oil; problems arise before these steps. However, from the aesthetic finish point, the console of the infotainment system is well developed and seems to last easily in the years to come.

Conclusions

Like all Ford cars, the Ford Mondeo has precise, direct and pleasant steering systems for enthusiastic drivers, that they are agile and quiet cars and that the space inside is generous for passengers.

That being said, Mondeo impresses with its quietness, agility, space, technology and design as much as it makes you want even more powerful engines and a more precise steering system. It will be a great choice if you plan to go on a trip with a small or medium-sized caravan.
