Mitsubishi Outlander – A popular SUV

The second generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander model proved to be an extremely popular SUV in the US and in Europe. Versatile, with a spacious interior and finished in Japanese style Outlander quickly became a favourite among those who wanted a slightly larger car, but with which to go without any worries to the mountains or the sea. 

With the second generation of the Outlander model, Mitsubishi understood how important a diesel engine is for the market and offered alternatives for this type of engine.

Mitsubishi Outlander II is one of the most popular medium-sized SUVs available on the market. Originally launched in 2001, the first generation was not very popular with the European public due to the fact that it was only available with petrol engines.

Mitsubishi Outlander – Engine 

Compared to the first generation, Outlander II came with a much more cursive and aggressive design at the same time, but more importantly, customers could now choose Outlander with the diesel engine. 

Mitsubishi had not yet developed its own turbo diesel unit, as the Japanese market was not interested in such engines. The solution found by Mitsubishi was the purchase of a diesel engine from Europe. 

Thus, the first examples of the Outlander II model had under the hood the 2.0 TDI engine of 140 hp of Volkswagen origin. It was not the quietest engine on the market, but it satisfied the Europeans’ appetite for diesel engines. 

Mitsubishi later adopted a diesel engine, this time a 2.2-litre HDI engine of 150 hp, and with the 2010 facelift was installed the 2.3-litre DI-D engine of 175 hp and 175 hp.

In addition to diesel engines, Outlander could also be ordered with 2.4-litre gasoline engines, but these units are rare on the Romanian market. As for the transmission, it is provided by a five- or six-speed manual gearbox depending on the engine, and some newer models may be equipped with a single automatic transmission or two-clutch automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi Outlander – Practical and good-looking

Inside, the Outlander stands out with its simple dashboard, without too many buttons. The controls are ergonomic, and the plastics used are good enough and withstand wear and tear. 

The top models were equipped with the Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer and touch display. The road-holding is excellent, the suspension being well adjusted for any driving style. In addition, Outlander can easily negotiate a macadam road. 

Most models have all-wheel drive with electronic control, but there are also 4 × 2 models. The direction is precise, Outlander proving to be a good partner for long journeys. The trunk is spacious and easy to access thanks to the large tailgate and the lower headboard that can be opened for better access. 

The seven-seater variants do not offer much space for the rear passengers, the seats in the third row can only be used by children or in emergencies.

At first glance, the 150 hp seem insufficient for a 2-ton car, but the 2.2-liter Intercooled Turbocharged engine pushes you well into the seat at a more determined press of the accelerator pedal, and the sensations are commensurate. 

On rough terrain, it managed as any SUV should handle on country roads, unpaved, field, mud. And you don’t even have to be a great driver, because the sensors tell the automatic gearbox how to run: 2WD, 4WD, 4WD Lock (full 4 × 4).

In terms of safety, Mitsubishi is also in trend, designing a function that anticipates the conditions in which accidents can occur and then assists the driver in such situations. 

The new OUTLANDER has three safety functions: ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), FCM (Front Impact Protection) and LDW (Warning when leaving the lane). Dangers are detected with a sensor mounted on the front. The driver is warned to avoid accidents as much as possible, and the vehicle takes control of the controls to ensure safety.
