Mazda CX 9: An honest review

It was launched in 2016 in Los Angeles and reached the European market much later.  The answer relies upon the fact that Mazda has launched this car with a powerful petrol engine, 2.5-liter turbo, to match the North American market.

In Europe, their 2.2-litre diesel engine, at its power, would not have fully coped with the size and weight of the car, and as Europeans prefer more compact SUVs, Mazda has thought that the sales potential would be too small to develop a larger diesel engine specifically for this model.

And with the 2.5-litre turbo engine, Europeans would have bought it in too small a number to prove their investment in EU type-approval.

It’s just that Mazda engineers have slightly adapted the turbo engine to harsher operating conditions, reducing its power from 250 North American HP to 231 Eastern European.

Mazda CX 9 – The huge SUV

The Mazda CX-9 has an absolutely imposing design, in which its huge dimensions have brought it the design language in a form that imposes itself dominant at first glance. The SUV measures 5.075 mm long, 1.97 meters wide without mirrors and 1.74 meters high.

As a comparison of generously sized SUVs, find out that the current Volvo XC90 is 4.95 meters long, the current Audi Q7 – 5.05 meters long, Porsche Cayenne – 4.92 meters, Range Rover – 5.00 meters and only Mercedes-Benz GLS is a bit longer long, at 5.13 m.

That being said, it is natural to hear that the Mazda CX-9 comes equipped as standard with 3 rows of seats, offering 7 seats on board. So we are dealing with a really huge SUV, which looks extremely good, from any angle.

The driving position is very focused on the pleasure of driving the steering wheel, with a wide and high armrest and a steering wheel location angle that will make you enjoy driving, a fact less common in large SUVs.

The gear lever is mounted very high, as if on a separate pedestal with all the controls around it, and when you operate it, you always remember that you are behind the wheel of a huge SUV.

Finally, Mazda has also thought about placing USB ports inside the armrest, so you can place your smartphone there, without having cables suspended around the centre console.

However, the multimedia system has essentially the same design and logic as about 6-7 years ago, when it appeared on the Mazda3, and the display graphics, especially in the navigation system compartment, seem a bit outdated.

What is certain is that the Mazda CX-9 feels like a model with sound insulation worthy of the premium segment. Not even the engine sounds too intrusive, not to mention the running noises. The Japanese have done an amazing job here!

With the third row elevated, the trunk remains quite modest, of course, rated at almost 200 litres volume. However, if the third row of seats is folded to the floor, the volume increases to 810 litres, and if the second row of seats is folded, then you have 1,641 litres volume.

In fact, if you fold both rows of seats, you can easily put a mattress in the Mazda CX-9, because it forms an area of ‚Äč‚Äčabout 2 meters long in which you can sleep comfortably, in case of adventurous escapades!

Mazda CX 9 – Driving sensations

Of course, the most interesting element of the driving sensations was to feel on your own skin the new 2.5-litre turbocharged engine from Mazda, developed based on the naturally aspirated engine of the same cylinder, available on the CX-5 and Mazda 6.

The connection with the road and the sensations behind the wheel – impressed us. Usually, at such large SUVs, at a more rational price, one opts for comfort at the expense of the more sporty driving spirit, and as a result, the SUVs are more flexible in corners, with less precise directions.

However, the Mazda CX-9 has unexpectedly precise and informative steering, so that the slightest movement of the steering wheel immediately translates into a change of direction. At the same time, the suspension is set with the firmness necessary for these small changes of direction to be made without a roller. For an SUV of such size, it’s really impressive!

Without passengers, the Mazda CX-9 weighs 1,926 kg. But even so, the SUV remains controllable, and the suspension manages to maintain the car’s trajectories well, aided by all-wheel drive.

Considering the mass of the vehicle, the brakes seem a little insufficiently strong at the first press. Every time it feels like you need to push harder than you anticipated to stop the car with the intentional deceleration.

Then looking at the diameter of the brake discs, compared to the huge 20-inch wheels, we thought that the model would certainly not have confused some brake discs with a slightly larger diameter, possibly with more pistons for an increased force.

Conclusions and more

We tell you that the new Mazda CX-9 is one of the most attractive large SUVs in the league of well-equipped ones. If you also take into account the 7 places, then the offer itself becomes unbeatable.

And the truth is that the Japanese SUV comes really generously equipped, seriously biting into the sensations of a premium SUV of the largest size, which costs about 2 times more, and if you take all these things into account, then the money you pay for it is worth it.

True, the model inevitably comes with a slightly higher declared consumption, but those who operate similar SUVs, even in diesel engines, can recognize that sometimes those engines easily indicate 12 litres in the city and 7-9 litres on the route, so the difference in real life is not very big.

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to engines, neither diesel nor hybrids, but the new 2.5-litre turbo engine from Mazda receives a maximum appreciation for the driving sensations from us.
