Can a Mazda CX-3 tow a caravan?

In today’s articles, we will answer the following question: Can a Mazda CX-3 tow a caravan? We will discuss the model’s engine, performance and driving sensations.

Can a Mazda CX-3 tow a caravan?

A Mazda CX-3 has a small towing capacity, thus it would be able to tow only a small caravan or camper weighing up to 1200 kg. Nonetheless, Mazda CX-3 simply feels right in terms of strength, dynamics and elasticity for an SUV the size of the CX-3.

The gearbox reacts well, by the way, so you won’t feel powerless on the CX-3, because the higher speeds bring the desired dynamism immediately. And then, that feeling of connectivity in the steering wheel will emphasize the dynamic character of the car, namely making it pleasant to drive.

Review: Mazda CX-3 facelift

First of all, we like the way Mazda CX-3 looks, the materials and technologies that are used, but we also liked the way it is driven, despite the fact that the rear suspension was a torsion bar in all combinations, including all-wheel drive.

So, as an exterior aspect, the main modified element is the grille, which now has fewer horizontal lines, four in number, but more massive. The LEDs in the optical blocks have also changed a bit. If previously the designers emphasized the extension of the chrome line of the grille in the headlights, now that line has been eclipsed by a new strip of LEDs, which continues the interrupted outline of the previously existing LEDs.

Similar changes have been made to the LEDs in the rear headlights, which have become slightly more smoky in the upper window. And, to conclude decently, we must mention the appearance of new possible rims for the CX-3. And that’s where the exterior changes end.

Inside, the Mazda CX-3 received a new center console, rethought in the philosophy mentioned above. Here the mechanical parking brake has now been replaced by an electronic one, and finally the Mazda CX-3 has eliminated the source of one of the few criticisms that could be brought to it – the lack of the armrest.

Now, with the facelift, the CX-3 has received a multifunctional armrest on the inside, which ensures the necessary comfort in a long road trip.

Mazda CX-3 engine and performance

The previous 1.5-liter diesel was retired prematurely, being replaced by a new 1.8-liter diesel engine. Constructively, the engines are similar, the difference being the cylinder and the accuracy of the injection, Mazda considers that 1.8 liters is, however, the right cylinder for a model like Mazda CX-3, not 1.5 liters.

The new 1.8-liter engine will deliver 115 hp and 270 Nm of maximum torque – as relaxed as possible for a modern 1.8-liter engine, but Mazda thought this was the right path for low real-life fuel consumption and lower emissions. In fact, Mazda has already started to switch to AdBlue additive for new diesels, so the rigors of emissions dictate engineering nowadays.

Mazda CX-3 Driving sensations

From the first minutes on board, you will notice that the steering wheel feels very upright and attached, just as compact SUVs rarely feel. Here is the work of an engineering fine-tuner, who wanted to get the best out of the existing engineering of the Mazda CX-3.

Thus, the Mazda CX-3 feels like a product even more perfected in road holding and in its driving precision. And the quietness with which the suspension works now can easily qualify it in the premier league. And all this is even more impressive when you think that on the rear axle we are dealing with a torsion bar.

So I don’t know what those Japanese engineers did in the end, but they performed this car exceptionally well in a complete end product.

As for the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine, even if the innovations are more in number for the new 1.8-liter diesel, and the gasoline engine we have small upgrades, designed to make it a little more elastic and more harmless in emissions, including by changing the shape of the pistons.

Now, while driving, this 150 hp engine simply feels right in terms of strength, dynamics and elasticity for an SUV the size of the CX-3. At faster accelerations, the gearbox will prefer to downshift faster, putting the engine at higher speeds, which are still heard inside, but soon you remember this natural philosophy of a naturally aspirated engine, in an era in which we are all used to turbo engines.

The gearbox reacts well, by the way, so you won’t feel powerless on the CX-3, because the higher speeds bring the desired dynamism immediately. And then, that feeling of connectivity in the steering wheel will emphasize the dynamic character of the car, namely making it pleasant to drive.

The bottom line

SUVs entered the market through the highest and most expensive segments, but with the passage of time, their popularity is such that they have spread to all sectors of the automobile, even the smallest. Now the boom is in the B-segment SUVs, derived from utility vehicles.

With the Mazda CX-3, those from Hiroshima make the first attack into the SUV-B and contrary to what we might think, it is not a derivative of the Mazda 3 but of the Mazda 2. The Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Citroën C4 Cactus have a new classmate who is somewhat risky since it mechanically bets on the Skyactiv philosophy, which is contrary to downsizing and supercharging practised by other rival brands.

The Mazda CX-3’s personality goes beyond its appearance.
