Mazda 3: An honest review

Mazda has always been characterized by making different cars, with advanced technologies, with mechanical groups with a trend different from that of its competitors and with anaesthetics and a market position different from that of its competitors.

The new Mazda3 follows this different car trend. Maintaining this trend of making different cars, the brand is now launching the new Mazda3, its compact model, which also represents the beginning of a new generation of vehicles once again marked by differentiation from its rivals. Its aesthetic is completely new, striking, with a robust rear and with proportions that demonstrate its maximum dynamism.

These proportions are based on a very wide and very low car with a very sharp front end, with a large grille and very sharp headlights. The result that the designers have achieved is magnificent, as you can see in the photos that accompany this information, although it is always something very subjective.

What I think is true is that it does not look like any other car in its segment, and that is already a big step forward. A very important detail in the new Mazda3 is its good interior habitability. Its cabin is very spacious, a consequence of a fairly large body and very well used. In fact, its length is 4.46 which places it among the largest in the compact segment.

In return, we have a very spacious cabin with good legroom. Even the height level is quite good. In this sense, you only have to make a small but: access to the rear seats. Aesthetics have prevailed in this regard and to achieve a more dynamic and sporty look, the roof falls at the rear. That makes a person over 1.70 meters tall have to bend a little to be able to enter those later squares.

Something that surprises when entering the vehicle is its great perceived quality. Each of the interior components has been studied to the maximum and materials that provide quality and good feeling are used.

An example is a material on the upper part of the dashboard that looks entirely leather but is actually a very nice looking plastic material that even includes something like the seams. A soft-touch material. It also offers complete equipment, with the most advanced technology including micro hybridization for the gasoline engine, which allows it to have its Eco label so important at this time.

As for help systems, and in addition to the “head-up display“, standard throughout the range, it includes most of the most important help systems as standard or as an option, depending on the finishes.

All of them included in the so-called i-Activsense with three important novelties, driver fatigue detector with a camera, front traffic detector and cruise traffic assistant.

Mazda 3 engines and performance

This new model’s initial range is a bit limited, as only a 122-horsepower gasoline variant and a 116-horsepower diesel are offered.

They are engines that, at least on paper, are not very powerful. But after driving both versions I can assure you that they are more than enough for 95% of users. The 116 horsepower diesel offers very good elasticity and great driving comfort, perhaps most important in today’s road conditions. The handling of the change is little necessary because the engine pushes with force from few turns.

As I said initially, Mazda always does everything differently, and for this reason, this engine is not a turbo, like most of its rivals, but a naturally aspirated one. In return, the engine provides a micro-hybrid system that optimizes consumption and reduces emissions figures.

In addition, this motorization has the ECO label of the DGT which is an interesting advantage. Its users can access the centre of cities with some type of limitation. Both engines are associated, as standard, with a six-speed manual gearbox that is exceptional as usual in the rest of the Mazda range models.

It is because of the travel of its gear lever, very short and with exact movements. It is almost impossible to make a mistake in the change unless it is done moderately well.

In addition, it is very fast and allows you to get the most out of either of the two engines. For both the diesel and the petrol version, a six-speed automatic transmission is available. It is not a double-clutch but a more classic torque converter, but its performance is so good that it is easy to think that it is a double-clutch.

Both versions, either diesel or gasoline, and with manual or automatic transmission, offer really good dynamic behaviour. It moves very flat, with fairly firm suspensions, capable of reducing body roll to practically zero. But at the same time, they are not dry suspensions and therefore it is also a very comfortable car. And its guiding precision is maximum.

That ride comfort that it provides, and which is at the level of premium compacts, is due to very well-calibrated suspensions, but above all because of the great silence that reigns inside. This quiet cabin is achieved even at high speed and not even the diesel variant has a noise level that is uncomfortable at some point.

The bottom line

In conclusion, the Mazda 3 impresses with a very good manufacturing quality, pleasant to the touch materials, impeccable ergonomics and the wonderful way it is driven. That being said, it’s clear that the new Mazda 3 is an interesting proposition, but it’s a few hundred cubic centimetres away from being a perfect car.
