Hyundai Kona: worth it?

Hyundai Kona is a subcompact SUV that first went into production in 2017. The Asian manufacturer wanted to launch a new SUV by drawing it as well as possible. Hyundai Kona is positioned in the segment of small suites together with Opel Crosslander, Skoda Karoq.

Onboard the new Kona, we find many innovative technologies that were once available on premium cars. From a distance, you get the impression that it is not a crossover but rather a compact car, but once you get close to it, you find that it is still a crossover.

The exterior design is attractive and avant-garde. He may look unusual, so he looks good. Hyundai indeed relies on the same risky book outlining the lines of the new Kona.

Hyundai Kona has a good glazed surface; the windows have good visibility both the front and the rear and the rear window which is quite wide. At tight turns, there was a problem if we can call it that, namely the body pillars confuse you a bit at those tight turns.

On the Hyundai Kona, we find a rear-facing camera that is useful and not very useful. Why? because it doesn’t give you excellent visibility when you manoeuvre the vehicle back. But in the future, there may be an upgrade to the camera.

Seen from the front, the Hyundai Kona has a “waterfall” type grille, two very sharp linear optical blocks. The fog lights are arranged in the front spoiler. The front grille has been redesigned without ventilation slots. On the car, we find two rails ideal for carrying extra luggage.

Hyundai thought of designing this car more unusually, but they showed courage and imagination going against uniformity.

Hyundai Smart Sense

Hyundai Smart Sense is a set of safety systems that come to your aid when you drive your car. Front-end collision assistance with pedestrian detection comes to your support, especially on unlit roads when visibility is very low.

The system is based on radar and a front camera. In the first stage, the driver is warned visually and acoustically by braking progressively to avoid the risk of an accident to reduce damage when a frontal collision is unavoidable.

Lane assist is also part of the technologies on the Hyundai Kona. LKA warns the driver visually and audibly by correcting the steering wheel to keep the vehicle on track.

The BCW blind spot monitoring system uses radar technology in conjunction with the lane change assist system.

It monitors the car’s rear side areas and will be useful when you have left or when you will change the lane and when the vehicle is detected in the back, an alert signal will be issued which is displayed in the side mirrors.

LED lighting technology. The HBA high beam assistance will be useful when near an intersection at night and in front of you comes a vehicle in the distance, it will not be blinded because it will automatically switch to a low beam.

RCCW reverse collision avoidance warning system. The system detects vehicles in traffic in the back and when you drive the vehicle in the back or from a low visibility parking lot, or when you leave the yard, you will be warned by visual and audible signals to know when to stop.

We find the Krell audio system on the new Hyundai Kona, and it will delight you with very good sound quality. We also see an 8-inch touch screen in the centre console that incorporates the Apple Carplay and Android Auto function.

Hyundai Kona engines

Hyundai Kona is available in two versions equipped with turbocharged petrol engines T-GDI 1.0 l and 120 hp and 1.6-liter T-GDi of 177 hp and one turbo diesel with 4 cylinders of 1.6 litres.

This car also manages to make speed. If you have sports ambition, you can opt for the 1.6 and 177 hp turbo engine. And if necessary, the 177 horses will help you when you overtake as the 1.6 engine manages to develop torque at higher speeds.

You can opt for this 120-horsepower 1.0 T-GDI engine with 172 NW of torque. The engine has been very well optimized to reduce fuel consumption and also to reduce emissions.

The 1.0 T-HDI engine can be configured with the front and manual gearbox version in six ratios.

Six-speed manual transmission is ideal for long-distance travel and fuel efficiency

If you want much more I can opt for the 1.6 l engine on 177 hp petrol. It develops a torque of 265. nm.

The engine can be configured with automatic transmission in seven ratios. all-wheel drive is available as an option. The seven-speed transmission is instrumental in the city; we still have to change gears as in a manual gearbox.

All-wheel drive proves its usefulness maybe twice a year when it’s snow or ice, but we also can’t deny that it doesn’t support you on gravel or slippery roads if you drive this season.

Conclusions

Kona offers various connectivity functions, customers having the opportunity to choose between standard audio system, with a 5-inch LCD touch screen, which includes radio, connectivity via Bluetooth and USB; 7-inch LCD touch screen audio system, which includes reversing camera with dynamic guidance lines, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moreover, Kona also has support for wireless induction charging (Qi standard) for smartphones.

The list of safety equipment includes the autonomous pedestrian braking system (AEB), blind-spot monitoring (BSD), lane-keeping assistance (LKAS), high beam assistance (HBA), driver attention monitoring (DAA) and assistance at the exit with the back of the parking lot (RCTA).

Hyundai is the only car manufacturer that manufactures the steel from which the range’s vehicles are made, with important advantages, materialized in the robust and light body, which contributes to the improvement of the performances and to the safety of the passengers.
