Jaguar XJ: is it worth it?
The old XJ was one of the most technologically advanced cars of the time. It’s the problem was that, apart from those who built it and a few who bought it, no one knew.
If I were to look for a culprit, I would go to the designers who insisted on camouflaging the technological advance in a body that seemed designed in the ‘80s. They called this strategy, preserving the traditional values of the brand. Later economists also had a name for this strategy, it was called a negative balance.
What has changed?
In short, everything. Surround the car a few times (at over 5 m long it would be good to have a minimum physical condition) and you will not discover even a shadow of the obsessive traditionalism that has defined this brand for the last two decades.
Some thought that the back could be more inspired, even so, you can’t deny the fact that the new XJ has a special stage presence, something that is increasingly difficult to meet in a class where originality is no longer a priority.
The interior is dominated by an interesting contrast between the high-tech side and classic British manufacturing. On the one hand, we have two digital screens, one of which simulates the classic dashboard dials, and on the other hand a classic mix of wood, leather and different chrome contours.
Let’s take as an example the upper part of the door: a large piece of wood, flanked by two pieces of leather with double stitching and continued by a speaker with a black grille through which you can see the yellow membrane of the speaker. A
all of them are elements that you can find in one formula or another and in an A8 or S-Class, only in this car, they have a role that the Germans do not consider a priority. That of making you feel special, without the need for a logical or practical correspondent.
Avoiding pragmatism also has some side effects, represented by the cheap analogue clock and the touch screen with poor ergonomics. Specifically, in the absence of integrated control systems for multimedia functions (e.g. iDrive, MMI), the XJ driver is forced to access most commands exclusively via the touch screen. That wouldn’t be a big deal, but the low sensitivity forces you to repeat the order many times.

Among the few elements common to the previous generation is the aluminium chassis, a solution that only Jaguar and Audi are currently using. For better or worse, the new XJ is the most successful Jaguar I’ve driven in years, and while it can’t be considered the best in the segment, it has one thing that most of its competitors have forgotten, personality.
