In this blog post, we will answer the following question: Can a Camry tow a pop up camper? We will discuss the towing capacity of a Toyota Camry and give you a few tips for a safe journey.

Can a Camry tow a pop up camper?

Yes, a Toyota Camry could easily tow a pop-up camper, as they weigh only about 300 kilograms (650 lbs). Still, keep in mind that towing can be dangerous if you don’t take it seriously.

While towing with a Camry, always remember that the vehicle is carrying extra weight. Give cars in front of you extra room so you have enough space if you need to brake hard. Test your towing skills in both drive and reverse gears in a parking lot before towing on the main road.

Please see the table below for more details on the towing capacity of a Toyota Camry.

With Toyota Camry on the road

Toyota Camry shares the new TNGA platform with Lexus ES 300h and is sold only with a hybrid system consisting of a 2.5-litre gasoline engine and an electric unit. We have 218 hp and automatic CVT transmission, which highlights the power resources very well.

Whether you’re driving around the city or on the highway, depressing the accelerator pedal leads to an instant response from the car. Especially at overtaking on national roads where I appreciated this hybrid-CVT combination to the maximum. In terms of sound insulation, Camry is very good: only when running at high speed the engine noise is perceived inside, but not annoying.

The list of standard features is very long and this is one of the most pleasant surprises. Right from the basic version, which is sold in Romania with prices starting at 30,669 euros, you have LED headlights for low beam, driver’s seat with electric adjustment, Adaptive Cruise Control, automatic high beam change and a generous package of assistance systems.

The Dynamic equipment we tested also has BI-LED headlights, wireless phone charger, infotainment system with 8-inch screen and navigation, parallel parking assist system, electrically adjustable height/depth multifunction steering wheel and 18-inch alloy wheels inchi. And we can say, for sure, that we don’t really find direct competitors that offer all this at 34,899 dollars.

Some tips for towing a pop-up camper

Each car has reported a maximum towable mass in its booklet. It would be good if this was higher than the caravan we intend to tow in order not to create a situation of excessive effort of the engine.

The diesel engine is much more suitable than the petrol engine. In fact, when driving with a trailer, torque values will have a lot of importance while the characteristics that make petrol engines brilliant, in acceleration and speed are less important.

The first step to take is to become familiar with hooking the pop-up camper to the car. It is a question of bringing the hook closer to the eye of the rudder, then the caravan is raised using the crank of the wheel and it is lowered into the coupling position by snapping the handle on the rudder: a small green pin will come out which signals that coupling has been completed. operate the stabilizer button, connect the 13-pin plug, then lower the trailer brake lever.

A trick to make sure that the caravan is properly hooked is to try to lift it with the crank of the wheel. If it releases, obviously, the operation was not performed correctly. Make sure the feet are raised, adjust the mirrors and the journey can begin.

The engine must always be in torque: a well-fired engine nips the oscillations of the trailer in the bud due to gusts of wind or simply due to the eddies produced by overtaking vehicles. Should the trailer oscillate, do not brake but accelerate to “pull” the caravan and put it back on the line.

The adoption of stabilizers on the hook has greatly reduced the effects of this phenomenon. They are installed as standard on almost all caravans or are available as options: we recommend them. Attention: the effect of the oscillation increases with increasing speed. Above 120 km / h this can become uncontrollable.

Overtaking on the motorway must be carried out without sudden manoeuvres with the steering but with full acceleration, downshifting before starting the manoeuvre and looking for the highest point of the torque to change. Keep in mind that the time to complete the manoeuvre will be tripled compared to what we do with the car alone and, above all, that many motorists do not understand the needs of those who tow.

Therefore, we do not force those who arrive in sudden slowdowns that can give rise to critical situations. When overtaking we try never to exceed 100 km per hour (in countries where it is allowed) and in any case to still have power available to counteract any fluctuations on the way back.

In ordinary roads, pay attention to the limits of shape in the signage. When turning, the trajectory is widened to compensate for the different turning dynamics of the caravan compared to the car. These are simpler manoeuvres than they seem and with a little practice, they will be automatic.

Final thoughts

We need to remind you of the safety rules, and that exceeding towing capacity is never recommended, as it can represent a great risk especially on a long road.  The weight makes your car less agile and less balanced, especially if you carry a lot of weight in the trunk, in the rear, if you have a roof rack, a trailer or any other accessory to carry more cargo.
