One of the most versatile compact SUVs on the market is the first-generation BMW X3 (E83). It was highly appreciated for the qualities it has shown in everyday use and its very efficient diesel engines for this class. 

The first generation of the X3 was produced between 2003-2010, with the vast majority of copies sold in Europe being produced at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria. In the compact SUVs class, BMW was the first manufacturer to offer such a model, it had no competition from Mercedes or Audi until 2008 when the GLK and Q5 models were launched.

When it was launched, the BMW X3 was offered with three petrol and one diesel engines. The petrol engines were 2.0i (150 hp), 2.5i (190 hp) and 3.0i (231 hp), and the diesel 3.0d (204 hp). 

A few months after its launch, the latter received an improved version with a maximum power of 218 hp. In 2005 the interior was updated, the materials became better, and the undercarriage was set to be more elastic. At the same time, the 2.0d diesel engine with a maximum power of 150 hp became available.

At the end of 2006, the X3 received a major facelift that included design elements for both exterior and interior, but also a new upgrade of the running gear to provide more comfort (before 2006 it was quite rigid ). 

The engines have been upgraded, given new names and increased power for the xDrive25i (218 hp) and xDrive30i (272 hp), and version 3.0sd / xDrive35d was completely new, with a 3-litre Biturbo diesel under the hood, which had a power of 286 hp. In 2009, the xDrive18d version was offered, with a 2-litre diesel and 143 hp. 

The automatic gearbox offered for certain engines has 6 gears and works very quickly, being pleasant as a level of comfort in congested traffic.

Unlike the rest of the BMW range, the X3 had a more practical purpose, without forgetting the Bavarian manufacturer’s sporty gene. The drive all-wheel-drive had a 40/60 front / rear axle torque transfer mode, which could vary in value depending on grip requirements. 

The interior was spacious, the trunk had a generous volume, and the level of comfort offered when driving was good (especially after facelift). The engine we recommend in the range is the 2.0d diesel version (ideally the 177 hp), powerful enough for a compact SUV and, at the same time, extremely efficient in terms of consumption. In addition, it has a very good resale value.

Even though it is very pleasant to drive and capable of rough terrain with medium difficulty, the BMW X3 is expensive to maintain, is known for the rapid wear of the discs and brake pads, but also for problems with the electrical system or clutch. 

BMW X3 F25 engines

  • 2.0 Turbo 184 and 245 horsepower – The only 2-litre gasoline comes on the X3 and offers decent performance for those who do not travel too many kilometres and who usually make their way through the city. 

Pay close attention to the engines until 2015 because they have the famous problem of the distribution chain which, if you ignore it long enough, jumps from the point and enters the engine spectacularly while the NSYNC band comes out of the torpedo and sings “Bye! Bye! Bye! ”

  • 3.0 Turbo of 245 and 306 horses – I am not necessarily convinced why you would want an X3 of 306 horses, but again, not my issue. Speaking of issues, there are occasional problems with the water pump.
  • 2.0 of 143, 150, 182 and 190 horses – Pay close attention to these engines because there are two (or two) very different engines. The first is the N47 head that has the famous rear distribution problem. 

The timing chain stretches and the timing must be changed, but the engine will have to be removed. You don’t have to be a typical  BMW driver to figure out what that means. Then in 2014 came the facelift with the B47 engine which proved to be a very good engine as long as it receives quality oil every 8000 km. 

  • 3.0 of 258 and 313 horses – Unfortunately no new engines came here with the facelift and you are left with only the N57 which is essentially the bigger relative of the N47. The same distribution problems, only they have a lower frequency

The bottom line

Without being as roomy as an X5, the BMW X3 has a more muscular appearance than its younger brother and, in any case, offers good habitability. The space available both in the rear seats and in the trunk, in this model, is quite wide. The model offers a good balance between its body dimensions and usable interior space.

At the level of dynamic behaviour, the BMW X3 is clearly one step below the X5. Much less communicative touches and, yes, a satisfactory experience due to its inclination more towards comfort than towards sportiness. A model that, in addition, offers a correct range of mechanical configurations, above all, due to its performance.

The BMW X3 since what it seeks to be is an SUV and a sports car at the same time – and in terms of performance it succeeds, despite all the physical factors that play against it. Therefore, the good work of BMW must be recognized, placing this car among the best in its market.
