BMW 1 Series: a review

The first generation of the BMW 1 Series was a success. It was a quality compact, with a temperamental design and with the most sporty behaviour in the segment. Today it is still a very interesting option in the second-hand market.

The 1990s saw a great expansion for the compact segment. In 1993, BMW signed on to it with the 3 Series Compact, a vehicle that was basically a 3 Series ‘cut out’ at the rear and with three doors. 

However, with the end of its commercialization in 2004, BMW decided that its replacement would be an independent model to the 3 Series, although sharing with it more than 60% of the internal elements. Thus was born the Series 1, presented at the Paris Motor Show in 2004.

This new 1 Series, with a five-door body, had a fresher design than that used by BMW, but respecting a basic pillar of the brand: rear axle propulsion. That, coupled with a moderate overall weight, a hard-hitting suspension and a powerful engine range, made the Series 1 the compact of choice for driving enthusiasts. 

The mechanical range consisted of three gasoline and two diesel versions. The first ones corresponded to a 116i -1.6 of 116 CV-, a 118i -2.0 of 129 CV- and a 120i -2.0 of 150 CV-. The seconds, both from a 2.0 block, concerned a 118d of 122 hp and a 120d of 163 hp. A year later, the sporty 130i with a 3.0 six-cylinder engine and 265 hp would arrive.

In 2007 there were substantial changes to the range. First came a three-door body, and immediately afterwards, a three-volume coupe and a convertible with a canvas roof, the latter already in 2008. In addition, there was a slight restyling in which the mechanical range was optimized. 

Thus, the 116i developed 122 hp, the 118i went to 143 hp and the power of the 120i grew to 170 hp. The 265 hp 130i remained, but now had a lower version of a 218 hp 125i. In addition, the coupe and Cabrio bodies could be associated with a new 3.0 Biturbo engine with 306 hp -135i-. The diesel, all 2.0, were 116d of 116 hp, 118d of 143 hp, 120d of 177 hp and 123d of 204 hp, the latter with twin-turbo.

At the time it was the best compact on the market in dynamic terms, and the only one with rear propulsion next to the Mercedes C-Class Sportcoupé. From its basic versions, the Series 1 was an agile, stable and balanced car thanks in part to its perfect distribution of weights, with 50% of it on each axle.

It was not the most comfortable compact on the market, but it did perform well enough in this regard and, in return, its firm suspension gave it great stability and excellent cornering. In addition, the steering still used hydraulic assistance, which was in favour of good steering precision. The manual transmission offered a very gratifying touch.

Regarding the engines, the diesel is very performance, although the gasoline exhibits an elastic response also forceful, especially from the 118i up.

What to check in the BMW 1 Series?

The generation of N47 diesel engines, which arrived with the 2007 restyling -116d, 118d, 120d and 123d-, was affected by a problem in the timing chain, which, due to a defect in its tensioners, wore out and ended up break with catastrophic consequences for the engine. 

Luckily, the breakdown is easy to prevent: if you hear a friction noise while idling, it is starting to fail. Units after 2011 a priori are exempt but, before those N47, the previous diesel -M47- or any of the gasoline is more recommended.

Conclusions

BMW 1 Series is not a cheap car, but at least you know that for this money you get a complete and well-made car, and in the 5-year warranty, overhauls and consumables are free. It is very important that BMW understood the disadvantages of the old generation and has now made a car that looks better from all points of view.
