Can a 1.5 Qashqai tow a caravan? (Yes but which?)

In this article, we answer the following question: Can a 1.5 Qashqai tow a caravan? We teach you how to tow a caravan and what car is the best to tow any type of motorhome.

Can a 1.5 Qashqai tow a caravan?

Yes a 1.5 Nissan Qashqai can tow a braked caravan with the maximum towable weight of 1360 kg, and an unbraked caravan with a  maximum towable weight of 692 kg.

Maximum authorized weight (kg)1910
Curb Weight (Posted) (kg)1393
Maximum towable weight with brake (kg)1350
Maximum towable weight without brake (kg)692

Generally, any trailer, caravan, boat carrier or horse-drawn van with a GVWR (F2 on the registration document) greater than 750 kg, must be fitted with a braking system.

You have to take into account that a caravan will weigh at least 750 kg, or so the manufacturers say and although they have wheels, their aerodynamic coefficient is not the best we can find, so the extra weight that the caravan already has you have to add the braking that will cause its volume.

In addition to that, we also have to take into account that when carrying a trailer, we need our set to be balanced, there is no use having a 280 hp car if later it does not weigh enough to be able to absorb the oscillatory movements of our caravan since it would take us off the road.

For all this, I always advise that the empty vehicle should weigh at least 20% more than the loaded caravan. You will find many people who tell you that with 70 hp you can perfectly tow a 750kg MAM caravan, yes, of course, you can move it and even travel with it, but the trip will be so painful that in the end, you will decide to change vehicles, I advise a diesel vehicle of at least 100 hp to pull a caravan of these characteristics.

What is a braked caravan?

A braked caravan activates brakes through a mechanical link from the tow bar; if the car brakes, it activates the trailer’s brakes. An unbraked trailer means that all the breaking comes from the towing vehicle, thus only from your car.

A caravan’s brake package consists, from the front of the trailer to the rear, of a 12-volt power source for both the caravan and a brake controller in the cab – call it a brake controller – a Harness from trailer brake controller to caravan hitch,  breakout kit, and brakes.

The trailer’s 12-volt power source is normally taken directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle’s battery or from a dedicated stud on the electronic control panel, which is usually located under the hood.

The power supply should not be changed by the vehicle ignition, as it may be needed on the trailer for lighting or accessory use when the trailer is turned off. If you anticipate heavy use of the 12-volt circuits in the trailer, additional electronics should be installed to avoid completely draining the battery (draining it).

How to tow a caravan?

The holidays are approaching and your caravan is waiting for you. But, do you know how you’re going to tow her? Do you have the right car? Do you know how to drive with a caravan?

To be able to hitch up the caravan in complete safety, think about the mechanics that will be able to install a suitable hitching system on your vehicle. Depending on the type of car, the price will be around $400-$500.

What driving-license do I need to tow my caravan?

Driving license B authorizes us to drive cars with a MAM not exceeding 3,500 kg. With this permit, we can also tow any trailer or caravan whose MAM is equal to or less than 750 kg, provided that the sum of the MAM of the car and the trailer does not exceed 4,250 kg.

What if the caravan that we like weighs more than 750 kgs? (any medium caravan already exceeds that weight). Well, nothing. With the B driving license, you can also tow any caravan over 750 kgs.

Of course, provided that the sum of the MAM of the tugboat and the trailer does not exceed 3,500 kgs. If the car + caravan set exceeds 3,500, we will need the B96 permit, which serves us up to 4,250 kg. And if the set weighs more than 4,250 kg, we will have to remove the B + E.

What car is the best to tow a caravan?

When it comes to choosing the vehicle that will tow your caravan, a minivan or a family car are ideal. They have good road holding, powerful propulsion and an efficient braking system.

While the caravan adds length to the convoy, it is its weight that can become dangerous. Therefore, good weight distribution in the caravan makes driving safer. Taking into account the weight of all the accessories, the different elements should be well distributed over the entire surface of the caravan. You can take advantage of the areas overlooking the axles to place the heaviest objects.

By calculating the weight that will be on the boom of the caravan or “drawbar”, you ensure the good handling of your vehicles. The calculation to be made is simple: The ideal boom weight is 7% for a caravan less than or equal to 1.2 tonnes. It should not exceed 5% for a heavier caravan.

By installing an axle stand on your car, you will not touch the ground if your caravan is overloaded and you will enjoy a more stable and safer ride. Finally, a reversing camera can be practical and appreciable to simplify manoeuvres.

Caravan: A few tips before taking the road

Before setting off, always remember to check the tire pressure on both vehicles. Caravan accidents are often caused by this little detail that is too often overlooked.

The good working order of the traffic lights is also important. If there is a fault, a mechanic can fix this quickly.

Sometimes an excessively heavy caravan zigzags behind the car. In this case, rather than braking or accelerating sharply, it is better to decelerate slowly while staying in the centre of the road. Finally, if the total length of the coupling exceeds 7 meters, you must maintain a safe distance of 50 meters between you and the vehicle in front of you.

The total volume of the car is also important mainly for three reasons:

  • A larger size of the towing vehicle helps to minimize the effects of the wind on the trailer, especially in caravans.
  •  Less difference between typical fuel consumption without a trailer and consumption while towing.
  • Typically a larger size packs more weight, and we’ve already seen that it’s good for towing.

However, we must also think about the time that we do not pull our trailers. If you buy a huge car, you will need more engine to move it, it will consume more fuel, it will cost you more to park it, more wear due to its weight.

Engine torque is the great unknown, it is the concept that generates the most doubts and yet it is one of the most relevant parameters when it comes to driving a caravan.

It is about the force that our car is capable of exerting about a distance. Engine torque (also called torque) is expressed in Nm (Newtons per meter).

Most of us have deeply rooted in our brains the idea that the power of a car is its strength, but nothing could be further from the truth. The strength of a vehicle, and therefore its towing capacity, is determined by its engine torque, not by power.

The larger the car’s displacement (due to the larger size of its cylinders), so is its engine torque. The problem is that it is not a constant value but depends on the power generated in the cylinders and the number of revolutions at which the engine is turning at that specific moment.

In summary, power is the speed at which a certain effort will be made, while engine torque represents the ability to make that certain effort. So for pulling caravans or any type of trailer, the more torque the better.

In this article, we answered the following question: Can a 1.5 Qashqai tow a caravan? The simple answer is, of course, yes it can.  A 1.5 Nissan Qashqai can tow a braked caravan with the maximum towable weight of 1360 kg, and an unbraked caravan with a  maximum towable weight of 692 kg.

When towing a caravan you need to follow safety rules. Make sure you do not overload the caravan and that the weight of the loaded caravan must not exceed 80% of the car’s tare. Before buying a caravan, it is essential to have an approximate idea of which are the caravan models that best suit us according to the vehicle we have to tow it.

What is the maximum weight for a single axle caravan?

The maximum weight for a single axle caravan is limited to 20,000 pounds, and axles spaced more than 40 inches and not more than 96 inches apart (tandem axles) are limited to 34,000 pounds. Gross vehicle weight is limited to 80,000 pounds.

How is payload calculated on a caravan?

To calculate the payload on a caravan subtract the Tare weight (the unladen weight of the van, as it left the factory, minus any dealer-added features) from the van’s Aggregate Trailer Mass.

How do you know if you tow too much weight?

You know you are towing too much weight when the rear of the truck will appear hunkered down and the front end will feel light.

Which is more important: HP or torque?

Both HP and torque are important when towing a caravan. It is obvious that the more power a car develops, the better it will manage the whole, but there are much more important variables. The strength of a vehicle, and therefore its towing capacity, is determined by its engine torque, not by power.
